Background
Wolof is the principal language of Senegal, in westernmost Africa. There it is spoken by about 3 million people (over 7 million including second language users). Wolof belongs to the West Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. In Senegal it is the main African language, predominantly urban, also used as lingua franca . It is different from Wolof spoken in Gambia.
